EL PASO, Texas -- U.S. Border Patrol agents have shot a man authorities describe as a suspected drug smuggler in the New Mexico desert west of Santa Teresa.

The FBI is investigating.

Thursday night's shooting occurred after the man allegedly hit a Border Patrol agent with his vehicle.

Authorities say the agent suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the vehicle was shot at least once.

He was in surgery at an El Paso hospital Friday.

Border Patrol agents say the vehicle had a large quantity of drugs inside.

They should be using M-4s with good ol Nato rounds. The crooks get to use vehicles. Our guys should have assualt rifles.

Within the next few days, we'll be hearing from illegal immigrant activists who will insist this guy was unarmed as he was smuggling all these drugs into the US ... and much of the world will believe them. It's too bad that so few seem to understand how dangerous these drug smugglers really are. When he comes out of surgery, I'll bet this smuggler also cops a plea and testifies against the agent who shot him.

Into another "Ramos and Compean" case? The FBI needs to investigate nothing. What they should be doing is taking this drug smuggler/hit and run driver, cuffing him, put him in a jail cell and throw the key away.
