Chimps banned as pets in Arizona

Chimpanzees like the one that nearly killed a woman in Connecticut cannot be kept as pets in Arizona.

"The public safety risk is just too great, it's just simply too great," said John Romero with the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

While chimps, orangutans and other apes are banned, smaller primates like spider moneys are allowed as pets -- with tight restrictions.

"Can't walk it on a leash, can't bring it to anybody's home, can't walk it out on the street, can't even have it in your front yard," Romero said.

While physical safety is a concern, monkeys also can spread many diseases to humans.

Sorrowfully, there are people who consider these magnificent creatures to be appropriate as family pets. More sorrowfully, even more people consider them to be appropriate for mutilizing in experimentation. (Such experimentation, by the way, is archaic.) It would be good to extend restrictions to include that aspect of animal protection as well.
