Cardinals' Warner wins NFC award

by Sports 620 KTAR (November 10th, 2009 @ 2:07pm)

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner has been named this week's "NFC Offensive Player of the Week" for his play in the victory against the Chicago Bears.

Warner matched his career-high with five touchdown passes in the 41-21 beating of the Bears. The touchdown total was one shy of the franchise record and he became the first Cardinal QB to throw five in a game since Charley Johnson in 1969. Warner's only other regular season game with five TD passes was 10/10/1999 vs. San Francisco when he was a member of the St. Louis Rams. He also had five TD passes in a Rams postseason win vs. Minnesota in 2000.

Warner capped the game's first four drives with TD passes and led the team to scores on each of the offense's first six possessions. He became just the third Cardinals quarterback since 1965 and the first since Neil Lomax in 1983 to throw for four or more TDs in the first half of a game. Warner finished the game 22-32 passing for 261 yards with five touchdowns, no interceptions and a passer rating of 135.9.

This marks the eighth time in Warner's career he has earned Player of the Week honors and his fourth selection as a member of the Cardinals. With this selection, Warner ties quarterback Neil Lomax (1984-88) for the most player of the week selections in team history.

It also marks the fourth time this season that a Cardinals player has been selected as Player of the Week. Calais Campbell earned special teams honors following the Cardinals Week 2 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars, cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was named defensive player of the week following the Cardinals Week 5 win vs. Houston and safety Adrian Wilson was selected for defensive honors following the Cardinals Week 7 victory against the New York Giants.

For the second consecutive season, the Cardinals have had a player of the week on offense, defense and special teams. Last year, the Cardinals had two defensive players of the week (Antrel Rolle and Gerald Hayes), two on special teams (Sean Morey and Neil Rackers) and one on offense (Kurt Warner). The only other time in franchise history the Cardinals have been so honored was in 1993 - Ronald Moore (offense), Eric Swann (defense), and Johnny Bailey (special teams).
