Meghan McCain talks marriage equality

The Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage equality has dominated the headlines since its announcement and it’s been an issue Meghan McCain, blogger, GLAAD board member and daughter of Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) has been fighting for since 2008.

“It was considered quite scandalous,” McCain told Mac and Gaydos on 92.3 KTAR of her coming out in support of same sex marriage seven years ago.

“It was the type of thing that got a lot of media attention, a lot of people thought I was crazy and completely out of touch with reality and now, people come out for marriage equality all the time who are also conservative and it doesn’t get that much attention. So we are living in completely different times.”

Regardless of that cultural change and the SCOTUS ruling, McCain still feels there is a long way to go for marriage equality.

“In case we forget, there’s a lot of work culturally left to do. For as many people that are excited as I am, there’s just as many people that are having epic meltdowns about it.”

Sixty percent of Republicans are not in favor of Friday’s Supreme Court ruling and McCain is urging her party to change that.

“Everyone has to get in line, this is the America we’re living in,” McCain said. “I don’t think we want to live in a time where we can regulate who can and can’t love someone and who can and can’t have different rights than another citizen.”

McCain went on, with consideration for the 2016 election.

“If whoever the nominee is doesn’t support marriage equality, we’re going to be seen as a party of intolerance and a party of the dark ages and it’s going to impossible for someone like me to defend.”
