If you’re thinking about what to give a couple on their wedding day, recent trends suggest that it’s best to skip getting them a toaster or a set of silverware.
The Wall Street Journal reports a growing number of registry users are “flat out asking for cash,” rather than seeking appliances, dishware or the like.
It also appears many couples plan to use those funds to upgrade to their house after tying the knot.
The cash-gift option “grows tremendously year over year,” with contributions to home registries second only to honeymoon funds, said Nancy Lee, president of MyRegistry.com. In the 18 months ending in August, about 19,500 users have created a cash-gift fund for home-related projects, she said. Some registries on the site have raised upward of $30,000, she added.
Dana Ostomel, founder of DepositaGift.com, told the WSJ that her crowdfunding website is seeing a rise in home-related registries, as well. She reported that users of her site in the past year gave, on average, $120 to home registries, as opposed to the $100 average gift to honeymoon funds.
Other couples insist that if guests must give gifts, it might as well be cash. “We said we didn’t want anything,” said James Brune, a real-estate agent who married last year. “But people want to give, and if you don’t channel them, they’ll give you stuff that you don’t want.”
