Mesa students given option to hold hands or be suspended

Two Mesa high school students were given a choice after getting into a fight: hold hands or be suspended.
According to ABC15.com, the two boys chose to hold hands, but the punishment is drawing a lot of criticism.
“Kids were laughing at them and calling them names asking are you gay?,” said student Brittney Smyers who saw the punishment play out at the school earlier this week.
Comments like the one above are why people are upset. Some felt the punishment was just, some felt it was bullying and a majority of student said they would choose to hold hands with someone rather than be suspended from school. It may be humiliating, but no classes were missed.
The school district, in a statement, said it does condone the punishment.
What do you think? Does the punishment sit well with you? It is bullying or is it a way to discipline students and keep them in school?
