The life sentence was handed down by the NBA Tuesday much faster than most similar court decisions.

There were no expert witnesses arguing about the state of Donald Sterling’s mind, the stress he was under or the trauma he may have experienced as a child listening to the “Amos ‘n’ Andy Show.”

Boom!

Commissioner Adam Silver banned the Clippers owner from basketball activities for life, along with a maximum fine of $2.5 million, which is the approximate amount Sterling spent on cars for his girlfriend.

His racist remarks and history were not a huge surprise. He’s been a slumlord for years with an outspoken bias against minorities in his properties.

Two things that have left me puzzled, though: First, the NAACP’s recognition of Sterling — twice — as a business leader of merit and second, the number of Internet responders who defended Sterling and questioned why anyone should be offended or consider him to be a racist.

Sometimes I think we have a long way to go.

I’m Pat McMahon.
