As we were settling in with "catch-up" conversation, my friend began to smoke. I was shocked. This was a person of some intellectual prowess, a published journalist who not only was brazenly endangering his health, but callously ignoring the fact that smoking is not allowed in this restaurant.
When I abruptly reminded him, he passively told me that he wasn't smoking, he was "vaping." He smugly told me his electronic cigarette produced no smoke -- only vapor. Then, with double smugness, he shared with me the tantalizing fact that the nicotine liquid he was inhaling was raspberry flavor.
If that sounds attractive to you, please note that real raspberries are not toxic and the lab reports I've read say e-cigarettes can be.
I'm Pat McMahon.
