Who doesn’t love an underdog?

So now we move into the Sweet 16 round in men’s college basketball and March really has had more than its share of madness, hasn’t it?

Great games, remarkable individual performances, stunning upsets. But for there to be an upset, you had to have a heavy favorite, usually a perennially successful, nationally recognized team losing to a smaller, unfamiliar school — an underdog.

You certainly would apply that name to Mercer of Macon, Ga., which beat powerhouse Duke in the opening round. And who was Stephen F. Austin? What did he do to have a college named after him? In fact, I’ll bet that Stephen F. Austin himself was often the last one picked when it came to choosing sides. Sound familiar?

It’s happened to most of us in life. That’s why most of us have been underdogs at something. At the time, we probably envied the person who always was the one everybody wanted on a team. But all those people could ever do is perform up to expectatons and eventually disappoint. We underdogs can always surprise. And I’ll take that anytime.
