Sticks and stones

Talk about mixed feelings — and not just any feelings, strong, passionate feelings about words and football.
Let me get right to the point. I really don’t like ethnic slurs. Any slang using nationality references or race as an insult or an attempt at humor, that’s where you lose me.
All the demeaning words that people tastelessly use referring to Jews, Latinos, Asians — all of them are offensive to me. At the top of the list, of course is the N-word.
So repugnant, in most circles, we use that substitute in polite conversations. But what about a place where polite doesn’t exist — an NFL football field?
This week, commissioner Roger Goodell let it be known that the rules committee is seriously considering a 15-yard penalty for the use of the word during a game. What a strange, hypocritical kind of sensitivity it is when, in a pile of players, there will be crotch grabbing and eye gouging, but we will be spared the N-word.
Next rule change…a player will be immediately ejected from the game for using the phrase, “Yo mama is so fat…”
