CVS spells ‘Integrity’

I smoked for about 30 years. I have no idea why.

Oh, wait — I know why I continued that long: I was addicted to nicotine.

But everything — my breath, my hair, my clothing — all smelled like tobacco. I had brown stains on my fingers and my teeth were yellow. Oh, and I was killing myself.

Attractive, huh?

Well, with the help of my family, I quit, and that’s when the rest of my life began.

On Wednesday, there was also big news about quitting, when CVS pharmacies announced they were ending the sale of cigarettes and all other tobacco products by Oct. 1. Seems like a common sense thing to do for a health organization, especially when it will cost their 7,600 stores a combined $2 billion.

And while I’m shouting their praises, don’t bother to shout back at me the sophomoric argument that CVS should then stop selling wine and gummy bears, because they can be bad for you, too. Must I remind you that it’s the misuse of anything that can be harmful? Tobacco simply has no positive value.

Congratulations, CVS, I’m proud of you.

Now, Walgreens…can we talk?
