It’s Greek to me

Wow! The Sun Devils really look tough.
They were really hitting people right and left. The football team? No! I was talking about the faternity guys on any given night in Tempe.
Listen, as much as I respect the enormous number of accomplishments and academic achievements accumulated over the years by Arizona State University, is there anyone in charge of the fraternity houses and their members now that they’re all off campus? It’s gotten so bad that I’m waiting for Greece to prohibit the use of its alphabet.
How bad is it? Well, a new semester just started and in recent months, besides the virtually unlimited distribution and consumption of alcohol, violence on the Tempe campus is often out of control: A student suffering serious injuries after being beaten by frat boys, a drunk student drowns in Tempe Town Lake after a frat party, gang fights with bats and firearms.
And, while not all fraternities are involved in this kind of brutish behavior, one must ask, in the 21st century, what is their value? Are many fraternities nothing more than gangs with textbooks?
I’m Pat McMahon.
