After yesterday’s Supreme Court rulings, the subject of gender differences is on my mind, and not about marriage. That still has a long way to go before it becomes commonplace.
No — I want to talk about a gender discrimination subject that still seems to be a major debate topic and I have no idea why — girls playing boys sports. Right now, today, more than 100,000 girls are playing sports that used to be, like tree houses, for guys only. They’re pitching, catching and batting on baseball teams. I said baseball, not softball. They’re playing football, often as kickers, but sometimes in the trenches — the line. Girls play boys hockey — they even wrestle and but for a few misguided ministers, the crowds love them, especially when they win… and they do win.
All of this came up again, because a 12-year-old Georgia girl, a defensive end, has been kicked off her sixth grade football team. One of the reasons given was that having her on the team might “give the boys impure thoughts.”
Listen, if a 300-pound player named Joann runs a 4.5 and shows up at the Cardinals office… sign her!
I’m Pat McMahon.
