Sports Kabob - 1/5

by Jarrett Carlen/Sports 620 KTAR (January 5th, 2011 @ 5:28pm)

Ladies and gentlemen (and especially ladies), welcome to the Sports Kabob, a skewered look at the world of sports and pop culture.

Here are the top stories:

Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins has banned gambling on team flights following a fight between two teammates over a debt from a card game. The ban, which takes effect immediately, follows a confrontation between guards O.J. Mayo and Tony Allen during a team flight on Monday.
Well at least it's good to hear of a confrontation with someone named OJ that didn't end in a bloody murder.

Tom Cable was fired by the Oakland Raiders front office after an 8-8 season.
And in related news, the Oakland Raiders front office has been punched in the face.

The Raiders are expected to name offensive coordinator Hue Jackson head coach.
Hue Jackson is highly endorsed by confused owner Al Davis, who says he's always loved his portrayal of Wolverine in the X Men movies.

Left homeless after his life and career were ruined by drugs and alcohol, Ted Williams has been offered a job by the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers after he and his tale became an online curiosity.
Williams says he is grateful to have the opportunity with the Cavs, though in a few years he will probably leave to work with 2 other smooth talking hobos in Miami.

Michigan has fired head coach Rich Rodriguez.
During his outgoing press conference Rodriguez was criticized by many, and unsurprisingly was not able to defend himself.

Roberto Alomar was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his second year of eligibility.
Alomar said he was shocked when he heard the news and actually spit the morning coffee out of his mouth…and on to the face of an umpire.

As usual, a large ball was dropped in Time Square on New Years Eve.
However, on New Years Day most of the ball dropping was done by the Big Ten.

Cam Newton says his father will be coming to the BCS championship game.
Though he is willing to change his mind for a price.

Barack Obama's top spokesman Robert Gibbs is stepping down and will be leaving the White House.
And no surprise, the top candidate to replace him is Jim Harbaugh.

Baylor has supplanted Connecticut as the No. 1 team in the ESPN/USA Today women's college basketball coaches' poll, vaulting to the top a week after the Huskies' 90-game win streak came to an end at Stanford.
Also now vaulting to the top due to Uconn's loss? America's disinterest in women's basketball.

That's all for this week, leave comments, follow me on Twitter and remember this is Jarrett Carlen saying forget about those dead birds that fell on New Years. The Cardinals looked lifeless all season.

Your comments were very funny and unfortunately also very accurate about the state of Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders.
