Paradise Valley police have confirmed that three women and two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of a prominent Arizona couple.
Paradise Valley Police Chief John Bennett said the agency had recovered substantial evidence, including the murder weapon, stolen evidence and statements.
"Paradise Valley detectives...worked round-the-clock to positively identify those who are responsible for this shocking and appalling crime," said Bennett.
The Phoenix Police Department, Mesa Police Department and federal agencies aided in the arrests, Bennett said.
Police say Michael Lee Crane faces two murder charges, as well as kidnapping, armed robbery, arson and burglary charges. The other four suspects are facing theft or trafficking in stolen property charges. Crane's residence was unknown, but the other four suspects are from Phoenix.
Four others have also been arrested in the case.
All suspects were booked into the Maricopa County Jail.
Lawrence, 79, and Glenna, 78, Shapiro were found bound, shot and burned beyond recognition in the Paradise Valley home after a car registered to the couple was found about 20 miles away, also on fire.
Coroners had to use dental records to identify their bodies after they were found in their posh home on Jan. 30.
Police do not believe the couple were specifically targeted.
A memorial service was held Tuesday for the couple, who were very active in the community.
The Shapiros are survived by three grown children and four grandchildren.
