TEMPE, Ariz. -- An Arizona Department of Public Safety Officer is among two people injured as the result of an accident on a Valley freeway. It happened at around 9:30 p.m. Friday night. DPS says a suspected impaired driver rear-ended the officer's car on eastbound I-10 at the US- 60. The officer and two other people were in the officer's car. They were waiting for a tow truck to finish loading a car from a previous accident. The officer was going to give the other two people a ride off of the freeway when his patrol car was hit. Both the officer and one of the passengers were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries, but DPS says both are expected to recover. Their names have not been released. DPS has not said whether the driver that hit the officer's car has been arrested. The accident led to freeway closures in the area for several hours Friday night, with traffic backups as long as two miles reported.
