Texting ban singling out semi-truck drivers?

The federal government has banned truckers from using hand-held cell phones and some trucking advocates said professional drivers are being singled out.

Those speaking on behalf of truckers want people to remember that, in general, professional drivers tend to be safer drivers.

"Most people don't realize that truckers are generally very good drivers," said Michael Hayes with the Arizona Trucking Association. "There's lots of truckers in different companies that have over 1,000,000 safe miles or more in their career."

Hayes said the regulations are not cheap to enforce and that will ultimately cost the consumer and that about 80 percent of collisions involving a semi-truck are caused by passenger vehicles.

The regulation targets drivers of large commercial vehicles involved in interstate commerce and those hauling dangerous materials.

It's up to state and local authorities to enforce the laws, but only a few said they would.

The American Trucking Association said it supports the ban.
