What’s it like to be a nun?

“The hills are alive with the sound of music…” and the sounds of the Broadway play that is being revived everywhere, as if it ever went away.

Besides the Julie Andrews movie, which is constantly available, the new live TV version with Carrie Underwood has captured a huge audience in addition to performances on Valley stages. But why this excess of “Edelweiss?”

Perhaps there is a fairy-tale quality to the story of a young, independent, Austrian girl who aspires to be a nun, but falls in love with the father of seven. But how idyllic is life in the convent? Is the discipline more military than spiritual?

Some answers come by asking the question, “What’s it like being a Roman Catholic nun?”
