It was just after lunchtime on Wednesday, April 21 2004.

The ROTC class from Cesar Chavez High School was picking up trash along 43rd Avenue and Baseline when they came across human skeletal remains.

“The body was never identified so, unfortunately, the victim is referred to as a Jane Doe,” said Phoenix Police Sgt. Darren Burch. “We believe she was 30 to 50 years of age, 5-foot-1 to 5-foot-5 with brown hair.”

She wore over-the-counter reading glasses on a string around her neck. She had an earring with a clear stone and a black Velcro-band watch. She was wearing a blue zippered jacket, t-shirt and a plaid flannel shirt. Investigators now have a composite sketch of what she may have looked like.

Next we go to north Phoenix. On Sunday, Dec. 8 2013 at about 3:30 p.m., 28-year-old Andre Wilkes was shot in the driveway of an apartment complex. He ran into the roadway and collapsed.

Sgt. Burch said while he was still alive on the way to the hospital, “he was unable to assist the investigation. We have no idea who shot him or why.”

Wilkes died at the hospital and no next of kin has been found. A suspicious vehicle seen leaving the area is described as a black, newer model SUV, possibly a Ford Explorer.
