Irish actor Peter O'Toole, most famously known for his lead role as T.E. Lawrence in 1962's "Lawrence of Arabia," passed away in a London hospital on Saturday night, his agent has said.

O'Toole, who overcame stomach cancer in the 1970s, had been battling a long illness, The Guardian reported.

The actor announced his retirement last year, saying, ""I bid the profession a dry-eyed and profoundly grateful farewell."

O'Toole was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2003 after receiving eight nominations -- most recently for "Venus" in 2006 -- and no wins, an Academy record.

He is survived by his two daughters, Pat and Kate O'Toole, from his marriage to actress Siān Phillips, and his son, Lorcan O'Toole, by Karen Brown.
