Phoenix nursery provides home for kids, help for parents

A Phoenix nursery is seeking to both help children and provide relief for parents running out of options.
“We get calls from CPS, we get people from the community looking for help, parents that have the courage to stand up and say ‘Hey, I need some help. Can you take care of my kids while I take care of my different type of addictions or if I need to take care of court appointments.’ We’re there for the community as well as for children that have been removed from their homes,” Crisis Nursery Resource Development Director Damita Curry told News/Talk 92.3 KTAR’s Mac & Gaydos on Friday.
Curry said the shelter has about 120 volunteers who do everything from changing diapers to helping kids with homework and getting ready for school. Volunteers are asked to commit for six months.
The shelter houses 27 children daily. It takes in children who were just born to 8-years-old. Children with younger siblings are permitted to stay until they are 11.
Curry said the shelter needs a lot of supplies to stay open.
“Anything you think a child would need,” she said, specifically naming shoes, diapers, pajamas and toys.
