Judge extends delay of 9/11 case at Guantanamo

MIAMI (AP) – The latest delay in the Sept. 11 war crimes case at Guantanamo is getting longer.
The military judge presiding over the case has postponed a pretrial hearing that was scheduled to start next week amid uncertainty over whether one defendant is mentally competent to stand trial.
In December, Army Col. James Pohl adjourned the case so military doctors could determine if defendant Ramzi Binalshibh is competent following repeated outburst in court. But he refused to meet with the doctors in January and they could not make a finding. A ruling issued Thursday set a hearing on its mental status for April at the U.S. base in Cuba.
A trial date has not yet been set for the five men charged with orchestrating the Sept. 11, 2001, attack.
