The drums of war

We were all outraged by the recent beheadings undertaken by ISIS/ISIL. The president promised a firm response, but “no boots on the ground”.
Is this possible? What if an American pilot is shot down, captured, and beheaded? Will “no boots on the ground” be tenable then?
If we are going to bomb, this is war. If we are going to go to war, shouldn’t we consider what we are getting ourselves into first?
