Lisa Schnebly Heidinger has gathered together a group of like-minded Arizonans to, as she puts it, “take back Arizona.” The group bought a half-page ad in the Republic urging all of us to “be part of the light at the end of the tunnel.” The tunnel is the current state of politics in our state, where the agenda is driven by a few on the fringe.
The light represents something we all should do — vote. As Republic columnist Laurie Roberts points out in her piece on the ad, many of Arizona’s races are decided in the primaries. In 2012, only 28 percent of Arizona’s registered voters participated in the primaries. Only 7 percent of independents did. 22 of the 30 state senate primary candidates faced NO opposition.
There are about 5 million eligible voters in Arizona. Only about 3 million are registered. Do the math, and you’ll see the candidates who made it to the last general election were selected by just 16.8 percent of Arizona’s eligible voters. If you agree we don’t have a government that represents Arizona, light the light by registering to vote if you aren’t registered and then by voting in every election. With vote-by-mail, it’s so easy there’s really no excuse anymore. Click here to go to the Secretary of State’s website page to register, and request your early ballot by mail.
