AMMAN, Jordan (AP) - President Barack Obama says each of his proposed steps to reduce gun violence should get a vote in Congress- even an assault weapons ban that both parties agree stands little chance of passing.

Senate Democrats dropped the ban from the bill they plan to debate next month out of concern it could sink the whole package. Still, Obama says he's pushing for it.

In his weekly radio and Internet address released Saturday, Obama says the U.S. has changed in the three months since the December school shooting in Newtown, Conn., left 20 first graders and six educators dead. He says Americans support the ban, plus limits on high-capacity ammunition magazines, school security funding and a crackdown on gun trafficking.

"Today there is still genuine disagreement among well-meaning people about what steps we should take to reduce the epidemic of gun violence in this country. But you, the American people, have spoken," Obama said.

The White House said Saturday that Obama will make additional trips outside Washington to rally support for the measures, including the assault weapons ban. The White House also said that before Obama left for Israel earlier this week, his push for gun control was among the issues he raised with lawmakers from both parties as he embarked on a concerted effort to reach out to Congress.

In the Republican address, Sen. Mike Lee of Utah says the Senate Democrats' budget raises taxes by $1.5 trillion without doing anything to save entitlements like Social Security and Medicare. He says Republicans want a balanced budget that lives up to the nation's moral obligation to act in the best interest of future generations.

"Republicans recognize that keeping dollars, decisions, priorities and power in the hands of the people is what has made America the greatest civilization the world has ever known," Lee says. "Now is the time to return to that model."

More facts brain dead liberals hate
Gun control advocates just need to look at Virginia. Between 2006-2011 gun sales went up by 73 and at the same time gun related violent crimes fell 24. Virginia Commonwealth University professor Thomas R. Baker, who specializes in research methods and criminology, said this proves that more guns do not in fact cause more violence.

    The facts keep coming
watch out micho. Guns are a major part of Switzerland’s culture. Instead of a standing army they have a militia. Men between the ages of 20 and 30 are put into the militia and undergo military and weapons training, which means Switzerland has one of the highest gun ownership rates in the world. Yet, Switzerland has a low crime rate. In 2010 there were only 40 gun homicides.

Violent crime has shown a dramatic drop
at the exact same time that the U.S. Hispanic population has surged. There is a clear correlation between these events and bodes well for our country as the Hispanic population continues to grow.

    "Contemporary gun nuttery,
driven and inflamed in large part by the knee jerk reactions of the Left wing nuts." There, I corrected your comment for you Micho. Gotta love the comment about the growing Hispanic population being responsible for lower crime rates. If they can come here and lower crime rates, you would think they could do the same for their own country as opposed to running away. I guess that's what you call Mexican national pride.

Mexico, yrreta. They are all law abiding and they vote religiously. Some of them own guns. Republicans want their vote badly and the Republican Party will fight the good fight to emerge from the Dark Ages of extremist control of their social/political agenda. Expect moderation and compromise in the areas of immigration and gun control from your elected representative. BTW, their is no scientific evidence linking increased gun ownership to crime reduction.

    The Republicans, same as the
Democrats will harvest votes from the greenest pastures. On the outside it's packaged as reform and change, on the inside it's all about political agendas and career advancement. Change is coming, but it isn’t for the general population like you and I, or our children. BTW where is the scientific evidence linking increased Hispanic population with decreased crime?
