WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama says "the moment is now" for Congress to act to overhaul the nation's broken immigration laws.

Obama spoke at a White House event hours before the full Senate holds its first votes on a landmark bill. The legislation would create a path to citizenship for many of the 11 million people in the U.S. legally.

The president says the Senate bill isn't perfect and no one will get everything they want. He says the bill would be a massive investment in border security and would give employers a reliable way to check whether those they're hiring are in the country legally.

Obama also says the pathway to citizenship offered in the bill would be "no cakewalk" for those already in the country illegally.

    Not true at all, don't post unless you speak the truth. I too was born overseas to an American father, I was born in a small town, not on a military base. I do not have to carry anything to prove citizenship, if I travel abroad I use my passport Drama Queen.

    B.S. I was born overseas to an American father and a German Mother. I never had to prove citizenship nor will I have to. You want to talk your Drama Queen crap, tell it to someone else. I have a drivers license and a passport just like anyone else.

    Now that I have pretended to seal the border, we can make believe that it is finally secure. I have proclaimed it to be, despite what you might hear of invaders and our increasing failure to deport or punish them. My new path to citizenship will encompass those who have established roots here as well as those who, uh, pop up. They’ll all love me for it, continue to outnumber the defenders of the Constitution, and thus fuel my bigger agenda.
