PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- The Navy says it has put a Virginia base on lockdown following a stabbing.

The stabbing occurred Friday at Naval Support Activity Portsmouth Annex, which is home to Naval Medical Center Portsmouth.

Social media posts by Navy Region Mid-Atlantic say a service member was stabbed and was in taken to a hospital in critical condition. No suspect has been caught. Traffic in and out of the base has also been halted.

The stabbing victim's condition is not known. Capt. Michael "Jake" Johansson, commanding officer of Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads, said the men knew each other and got into an altercation.

Navy public affairs officials said they were still collecting details on the incident and would provide further details later Friday morning.

The annex is home to the nation's first medical hospital.
