Gunshot fired on Kent State campus; suspect sought

KENT, Ohio -- An order for students and faculty members to shelter in place following the firing of a gunshot at a northeastern Ohio university has been lifted for most buildings on campus.

A Kent State University spokeswoman says a male suspect fired the shot into the ground Wednesday night near Bowman Hall, an academic building on the university's main campus. No injuries have been reported.

The university had advised people to stay put while police searched for the shooter, who was carrying a silver handgun. It later lifted the advisory for all buildings except Bowman Hall and the Business Administration Building.

University police are handling the investigation.

Immediately after the shooting, social media sites were flooded with updates.

Numerous tweets said an emergency alert was sent via text messages to students warning them of the situation.

Kent State is a public research university located in Kent, a city of about 30,000 residents less than an hour's drive southeast of Cleveland. The university has eight campuses around the northeast Ohio region. The campus in Kent is the largest.
