MILWAUKEE (AP) – Michelle L. Johnson, an editor who helps direct coverage of agriculture at The Associated Press and supervises the cooperative’s report in several states each weekend, has been named the AP’s correspondent in Milwaukee.
The appointment was announced Wednesday by David Scott, the AP’s regional editor for the central U.S., and Doug Glass, AP’s news editor for Wisconsin and Minnesota.
As correspondent, Johnson will work with Glass to craft the AP’s state report in Wisconsin. She’ll serve as editor to the staff of reporters based in Milwaukee and Madison while also contributing to the wire as a reporter focused on agriculture in the state and across the nation. She begins April 1.
“There are few people I know who are as passionate about the story of Wisconsin as Michelle,” Scott said. “And a huge part of that story are the farmers and growers who live in Wisconsin and work its land. That makes her the perfect fit to lead the AP’s state bureau as our new Milwaukee correspondent.”
For the past three years, Johnson has served as an editor and the weekend supervisor at the AP’s regional editing desk in Chicago. In that role, she also helped direct coverage of agriculture and food, serving as the primary editor of the AP’s Food and Farm feature.
Prior to her work in Chicago, Johnson was the day supervising editor in the AP’s Milwaukee bureau and a state government reporter for the cooperative in Providence, R.I.
“In Michelle and Doug, we have a management team that knows Wisconsin and its issues intimately, and is committed to serving AP’s members and customers in the state,” said George Garties, the AP’s bureau chief for Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.
Johnson, 43, is a 1990 graduate of Indiana University, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and history. Johnson also holds a 1993 master of arts degree in communication from Stanford University and a 1996 doctoral degree in communication from the University of Washington.
