Metal detectors not working day of school shooting

Feb 3, 2013, 1:25 AM

ATLANTA (AP) – School officials in Atlanta say metal detectors weren’t working at a middle school when a 14-year-old student was shot and wounded there.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (
http://bit.ly/U9Yax8) that public school administrators acknowledged in a statement late Friday that Price Middle school’s two metal detectors were “not operable” Thursday. The statement said an investigation found there had been limited use of the detectors at the school this year.

Atlanta police say they suspect the shooting, which happened in the school’s courtyard, may have been gang related. A 15-year-old boy has been arrested. The boy who was injured was treated and released from a hospital.

City school officials say they plan to immediately test all school metal detectors and review student entrance and exit procedures.
