HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Members of Connecticut's congressional delegation are attempting to secure federal funds to help Newtown build a new elementary school after last year's massacre- and they say senators owe the residents after failing to support legislation that would have expanded background checks for certain gun purchases.

U.S. Sens. Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal, and U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty, all Democrats, said Thursday they plan to offer legislation next week that would modify an existing grant that funds mental health counselors and overtime costs after tragedies such as the Dec. 14 shooting.

Murphy acknowledged it will be "a heavy lift" because the federal government does not fund school construction.

A Newtown task force recently decided to tear down Sandy Hook Elementary School and replace it with a new building.

    Horrible tragedy,
but unfortunately the gun control advocates will glom onto this like a newborn to his mother and run with it, leaving the victims in their wake.

Please, children are dead. Keep it to yourself, at least for now.

Stuff like this just doesn't happen in other countries. I would not say I am a gun control advocate, but I do think it is far to easy for the mentally ill to get guns in this country. What pains me is that people are so focused on their right to own guns that they don't care about the victims of this either. If you did, you wouldn't be making comments like this. I see school children getting slaughtered by a nut. The first thing you think of is someone kicking in your door to take your precious guns away.

Hard to believe this could happen in a state that has one of the strictest gun laws in the country. And sadly you are correct, that is exactly what gun control advocates do every single time.

Thanks for your reminder and opinion of my right to voice an opinion. You and I both know that I aint the only one thinking it, but may be the only one with the foritude to speak it. Doesn't make me a bad person, just one who calls it like they see it. Still a tragedy, but I can't fix it from here, I can only learn from it to hopefully prevent it from happening at my children's and spouse's school here locally.

What's ironic in what you say is the fact that I don't even own any guns. So I'm not too worried about someone coming to take my guns. Don't forget that the media will play a role in this as well. This story already mentions that the caliber was .223, whats that got to do with anything at this point? But I do agree with you that it is far too easy for those with social/mental problems to go out and get a gun.

How exactly are you going to prevent it from happening at ANY school? Patrol the halls with your MP5 and body armor and wait for anything suspicious? Really? You're right. There is nothing you can do about it from here - and unfortunately - there is nothing you can do about it if it were to happen here either.

Such a sad tragedy. Such a low form of human emotion.
