(AP) - Ready. Set. Shop! And with that, the holiday shopping season is underway.

More than a dozen retailers opened early on Thanksgiving Day and will keep rolling right through Black Friday, traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year.

Long checkout lines formed at a Target in Colma, Calif.; Macy's flagship store in New York's Herald Square was bustling; and patrons were seen digging through a shirt display at a Gap outlet in Los Angeles. Elsewhere, hundreds queued up outside a Kohl's in American Park, Utah, and Best Buy employees were getting pumped up for a big sales day in Overland Park, Kan.
