UN renews Bosnia force in face of Serb opposition

Nov 14, 2012, 9:10 PM

UNITED NATIONS (AP) – The Security Council has voted unanimously to renew the European-led U.N. peacekeeping force in Bosnia for a year in the face of rising Serb challenges to the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The mandate of EUFOR, consisting of some 900 troops, was renewed without debate Wednesday.

Bosnia has been governed by a weak central government since the 1992-1995 war that killed an estimated 100,000 people and split the country into two autonomous regions divided along ethnic lines.

Valentin Inzko, the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Security Council, told the council Tuesday that senior Serb officials are increasingly spewing anti-state, secessionist rhetoric challenging the 1995 Dayton peace agreement and threatening to degrade or abolish state structures.
