Father, son arrested in Arizona in shooting of Yavapai County Sheriff’s volunteer

ASH FORK, Ariz. (AP) — A father and son were booked on charges of attempted murder on Friday after authorities say they shot and wounded an armed and uniformed Arizona sheriff’s office volunteer.
The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office says 24-year-old Jason Niedermeyer attempted to take sole blame for the shooting Thursday evening. But he says detectives learned Friday that Niedermeyer’s father, Gregory, 49, fired the first rounds at what he thought was a deputy.
The 70-year-old volunteer had tracked an all-terrain vehicle that sped past him to a rural property near Ash Fork. Sheriff’s spokesman Dwight D’Evelyn says the volunteer was ambushed at the gate.
D’Evelyn says the volunteer was hit three times in the pelvic area, but he managed to make it to his marked vehicle and drove off. His injuries are not life-threatening.
