MESA, Ariz. — Mesa Mayor John Giles believes there is a way to resolve the rift between the city and Allegiant Air, following suggestions of a possible departure from Phoenix-Mesa Gateway over the city’s deal to bring in a new airline.
Giles said the city’s goal for the airport is expansion and that is what prompted efforts to bring Elite Airways there.
“For Gateway to continue to grow we need to bring in additional carriers and I think Allegiant understands that,” he said. “What’s good for the airport is also good for Allegiant.”
The city’s attempt to bring in additional options for travelers upset Allegiant Air though, which said the city offered unfair subsidies to Elite.
Giles said Allegiant is very important to the airport and city, so he will do what he can to make both Allegiant and Elite feel welcome at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway.
“We’ll do everything we can to make sure Allegiant feels valued and doesn’t look for another place to go,” he said.
