According to a report produced by the federal Internet Crime Complaint Center, Arizona ranked fifth nationally in largest amount of money lost as a result of internet scams.
The ICCC, which works in concert with the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center, says that Arizona residents were scammed out of about $25 million last year. Though the majority of complaints came from men and women over the age of 60, women ages 40 to 49 were the demographic impacted the most from internet scams in 2014, losing roughly $7.6 million.
Despite Arizona’s dismal ranking nationally in terms of money lost, the state ranked 11th in the U.S. in complaints received by the ICCC.
Nationally, the ICCC reports that the American public was scammed out of over $800 million, with most plots coming through business emails, online auto fraud and real estate scams.
