PHOENIX — Joggers rescued a man and his girlfriend from a house fire in Phoenix early Tuesday morning but the couple was in critical condition in a hospital.
Fire crews found two others on the lawn of house near 14th Street and Missouri Avenue. The two older women told authorities that the young man had gone back into the house to save his girlfriend and pets.
Once he managed to get inside, the door slammed shut, trapping the couple.
Two joggers then came by, kicking down the door and getting the pair to safety. The couple suffered smoke inhalation and at least second-degree burns, a fire official said.
The older women also were treated for smoke inhalation.
Authorities said there were no working smoke detectors in the house.
