PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks will have a special lady in the dugout Sunday when they take on the San Diego Padres.
Mesa, Arizona resident Barbara Nicholl will serve as the honorary bat girl as part of a league-wide recognition of breast cancer survivors on Mother’s Day.
“To know that my story was chosen was quite an honor,” she said.
Nicholl, who has been cancer free for 10 years, regularly fundraises for breast cancer awareness and spreads awareness of the disease. She is an annual participant in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk though one is no longer hosted in Arizona.
Nicholl will be recognized during a pregame ceremony. Prior to that, she will get a tour of the facilities and meet some of the players.
As part of the recognition of survivors, players and officials will wear pink-accented apparel and baseballs with pink stitching will be used, among other tweaks.
