PHOENIX — A Pinetop, Arizona, couple is deploying to Nepal to give aid to victims of a massive, deadly earthquake.
Glenn and Julie Bradley are American Red Cross volunteers and retired U.S. Army officers. They are also telecommunications experts with training at disaster sites.
Glenn Bradley found out he would be leaving on a communications mission with his wife just before his flight was scheduled to take off from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
It won’t be the first time the couple has been to Nepal. Sixteen months ago, the Bradleys traveled there to set up an emergency communications network.
Bradley said the quake was anticipated, so he worked with a team to put radio repeater stations in the mountains to provide radio coverage throughout the Kathmandu Valley.
He said he doesn’t know exactly where he’ll be staying on his upcoming trip, but that he is eager to start helping survivors.
The earthquake hit the Kathmandu region Saturday, and aftershocks were still affecting the area Sunday. More than 2,500 deaths have been counted thus far. The quake was the worst to hit the South Asian nation in more than 80 years.
