PHOENIX — For Carlos Morales, Jan. 16 will forever be a day simultaneously filled with sorrow and joy.
Morales welcomed four children to the world — Tracy, Paisley, Erica and Carlos, Jr. — while having to say goodbye to the love of his life, his wife Erica.
Shortly after giving birth, Erica suffered from hypovolemic shock, a result of severe blood loss, and passed away.
Two months later, Morales said he is doing the best for his children thanks in part to the generosity of total strangers.
“We’re just doing our best,” Morales said in an interview with NBC’s Today Show. “I’m feeling really, really grateful for everybody that just came together and helped us.”
Erica’s mother, Sondra Bridges, has moved in with her son-in-law to help take care of her four grandchildren.
“It’s funny how things turn out,” Bridges said in an interview with NBC’s Today Show. “Bittersweet, but at the same time, thanks to God, and the outpouring support of the public, it’s been phenomenal.”
Over 10,000 people have donated nearly $400,000 to the family in a GoFundMe page set up by Erica’s best friend.
Despite his grief, Morales is determined to be the best father he can be for his children.
“These babies don’t know yet what blessings they have given me. They have given me four reasons to live,” Morales said.
