PHOENIX — A Maricopa County detention officer shot and killed an inmate after an attempted escape near a Phoenix hospital Tuesday morning.
The inmate, identified as 23-year-old Angel Frescas, died after being taken to Maricopa County Medical Center near 24th and Roosevelt streets. The officer was unharmed.
Frescas had managed to get out of restraints and escaped from a medical transport van, which was carrying two other prisoners, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.
Frescas was shot several times on a street near the hospital.
There were bullet holes in the windshield.
Frescas was a suspect in a Sept. 18, 2014 officer-involved shooting.
