PHOENIX — Former Arizona Diamondbacks and Phoenix Suns President Jerry Colangelo has played a big role in the expansion of Grand Canyon University in recent years.
Now, the school in west Phoenix is naming another program after the man who helped bring professional sports to Arizona.
The new Jerry Colangelo School of Business offers more than 25 programs designed to educate students about the contemporary business environment.
Colangelo, 74, said the school has a bright future.
“We’re going to have gold standards,” he said. “We’re going to be seeking excellence in everything we do.”
Colangelo added that the school will have a great deal to offer students.
“It’s practical experience, it’s getting them out into the workplace,” said Colangelo. “What we can accomplish with the school of business in its entirety is to make a major, major difference.”
The university announced Thursday that it is already offering two Jerry Colangelo scholarships to the school of business. One will be awarded to a student in the Phoenix Union High School District. The other will go to a student in what the university is calling the Arizona Christian Canyon School Consortium. To qualify, a student must display academic excellence, integrity, service, and leadership in their school and in their community.
This is the second program named after Colangelo at the private university, with the Colangelo School of Sports Business being his first namesake.
