PHOENIX — Almost 40 train cars derailed near Picacho Peak late Monday night, after the National Weather Service had issued a severe weather warning.
There were no injuries and the 30 freight cars were empty, but still left a mess of crumpled metal that crews were clearing early Tuesday morning.
The accident happened about 10:30 p.m. near Interstate 10, between Phoenix and Tucson. Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis said the train was en route to Los Angeles from Houston, Texas. He said crew had reported having to slow down because of rain.
