PHOENIX — Hurricane Odile slammed into Mexico’s Cabo San Lucas overnight and its remnants are heading for the Valley.

The hurricane hit land Sunday night with winds of 125 mph. Pinpointing where it will hit metropolitan Phoenix is difficult but National Weather Service forecaster Dan Leins said the rain was likely to arrive as early as Tuesday.

Odile tore up exteriors of luxury resorts, wrecked other other businesses and homes, knocked out power and flooded streets.

Rain from Odile could continue to fall in the Valley until Friday. Leins said there was potential for a repeat of last week’s record rainfall and flooding in the area caused by the remnants of Hurricane Norbert.

“No two weather systems are exactly alike but we’re going to see a similar amount of moisture across the area,” Leins said. “Whenever you have the abundant amount of moisture that we’re going to see the potential is there for widespread heavy rain and flooding.”

That storm sent water into more than 100 Mesa homes along with other locations across the Valley.

The Phoenix Fire Department is offering sand for sand bags at numerous locations. Residents must supply their own bags and shovels. Mesa Fire was offering sand bags along with select Gilbert fire stations.
