FLORENCE, Ariz. -- A former Arizona Department of Corrections employee has surrendered to Florence police after his mother was found fatally shot in the home they share.
Police say 41-year-old Alexander A. Santiago was taken into custody Thursday.
He had been a corrections officer since May 2011 at the state prison in Florence. DOC officials say Santiago resigned Thursday night.
Police saw a suspicious person walking in the department's parking lot about 10 a.m. Thursday.
The man later identified as Santiago said he needed to be arrested because he had shot somebody.
Officers went to a Florence house and found 61-year-old Sean M. Lafitte dead in the kitchen. Police say she had a single gunshot wound to the head.
They say Santiago told them he shot his mother because he has anger issues.
