Only one way to handle ISIS, Sen. John McCain says: 'Kill 'em'

PHOENIX -- Arizona Sen. John McCain had some very blunt words for how the crisis in Iraq and Syria needs to be handled.

"Kill 'em," McCain told Fox News' Greta Van Susteren on Tuesday. "They've got to be destroyed."

"Kill 'em," McCain told Fox News' Greta Van Susteren on Tuesday. "They've got to be destroyed."

He said President Barack Obama needs not only a goal, but a strategy and policy to fit or implement that goal and "we have none of the above."

"ISIS has obliterated the boundary between Iraq and Syria," he explained. "You've got to go after them in both places and you can't do it with half measures and you need to use full weight of American air power...and it can succeed. We can stop them."

Last week, Obama addressed the current Mideast turmoil while at a Democratic fundraiser. He claimed the wold has "always been messy," but social media, and the media in general, has exacerbated the realities.

McCain said he was shocked by the president's comments and blamed him for how bad the situation with Islamic terrorist group ISIS has gotten.

"All this didn't have to happen," he said. "We could have left a force behind in Iraq that could have stabilized Iraq and we are paying an incredible price for the president's leading from behind...we are seeing the chickens coming home to roost."

He mentioned that former presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush all changed their foreign policy strategies after seeing failures or weaknesses, but Obama has refused to do so.

"I think that he's trying to stick to his two campaigns...where he said we're going to lead from behind, we're going to get out of everywhere (and) there's going to be the tides of war receding."

McCain said the Pentagon, CIA and State Departments have all developed plans for how to deal with ISIS, but it's ultimately up to the president to decide how to proceed.
