PHOENIX -- Authorities say a man has been arrested for allegedly defrauding several Phoenix homeowners over remodeling work in the past 17 months.
Phoenix police said Thursday that 42-year-old Stewart Charles Rooker is held on suspicion of theft, fraud scheme and identification theft.
Police say several people who had hired Rooker for remodeling work in their homes called to complain in March 2013.
Investigators say Rooker falsely portrayed himself as a licensed contractor and allegedly committed fraud-related offenses on 10 different victims, including five in Phoenix.
The Phoenix victims reportedly lost $22,000 and the 10 victims up to $100,000 in all.
One woman told police that she gave Rooker $3,150 to remove old furniture and buy new appliances for her home. She says the appliances were never bought or installed.
