NEW RIVER, Ariz. -- Students at New River Elementary School were evacuated from their campus about 30 miles north of Phoenix due to flooding Tuesday.
Maricopa County Sheriff's officials said the 89 students on campus were transported to the Anthem Community Center in the afternoon to be picked up by their parents or guardians.
Sheriff's officials said the move was a safety precaution after more than four inches of rain pummeled the New River area.
Some classrooms at New River Elementary were affected by the rain, which also flooded some parking lots.
