PHOENIX -- Southbound Interstate 17 has reopened in west-central Phoenix after a head-on wrong-way accident that injured four people, including two critically.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said southbound lanes reopened at Thomas Road shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday, over four hours after the Wednesday night accident.

The state Department of Public Safety said dispatchers got numerous 911 calls about a wrong-way vehicle but the driver was able to get around a DPS officer who tried to ram the vehicle to stop it.

According to DPS, the wrong-way vehicle then sideswiped another car with two people in it before the wrong-way vehicle collided head-on with another car.

All three drivers and a passenger in the sideswiped car were injured.
