Arizona State Fair board temporarily calls off building's demolition

PHOENIX -- The board that oversees the Arizona State Fair is at least temporarily setting aside its plans to raze an historic Depression-era building in the face of opposition from preservationists.

The Arizona Exposition and State Fair Board voted Tuesday to shelve plans demolish the Civic Building on the state fairgrounds in Phoenix until further notice.

Executive Director Don West says the board looks forward to hearing from community members concerning what he called "creative publish-private partnerships" to pay for preserving the building.

Fair officials have said repairs to preserve and put the building back into use could cost up to $1 million.

Meanwhile, a Maricopa County Superior Court hearing that was scheduled Wednesday on a proposed temporary restraining order to block the demolition has been postponed until Aug. 1.
